How often do we associate the word “manager” with the word “servant?”
In Matthew 20, Jesus says: “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” In these verses, Jesus is setting a standard for leaders and managers. Leaders who follow the model of Jesus use their power and authority to love and serve others.
In the past couple of weeks, Briana has initiated teaching a Management Training Workshop series based around the model of a servant leader. The Workshops will run for 10 weeks, covering a wide range of practical topics: building trust, communicating cross-culturally, delegating, providing feedback and managing conflict, to name a few. As we build strong managers who know how to serve others through their management, we build a stronger and more effective organization.
Over 30 people from across the ship are participating in this initial offering of the training; the training is planned to be offered again in August and then annually. Below is a picture of Briana leading one of the Workshop groups.
Thanks for the support of those that make it possible to bring us here onto the ship. It’s really helpful for the ship’s volunteer managers to have top notch training like this, so that they can become better leaders.
