Renewing of Mindsets

Over the past couple of weeks, a group of eighteen men from the Africa Mercy have been experiencing transformation. While the patients we see through our ship’s hospital have a physical transformation that may touch their heart and mind, these men are experiencing mind transformation with major ramifications for the physical world around them.

The men pictured above are currently finishing-up their OnBoarding training, which is required for long term service with Mercy Ships. They come from seven different African nations and work around the ship, from the Engine Room to the Hospital to our Agriculture site. Many of them joined Mercy Ships when the Africa Mercy was in their home country.

The OnBoarding training here consists of three phases. In the first phase, the participants learned about Mercy Ships core values, cultures and worldviews, servant leadership models, prayer and God’s character. In the second phase, they traveled to Yaounde, the capital city of Cameroon, to hear from a West African teacher. They were challenged to examine the roots of their cultural beliefs and to align their worldview with that of the Bible (it was challenging for me too!). They were encouraged to develop personal plans for showing Jesus’ love in their families and communities and in the process bringing transformational development. In the third phase of the training, participants are required to follow through on their plans.

I (Briana) taught a section on “Leadership Following Jesus’ Model,” then traveled to Yaounde for four days to participate in Phase 2 of the training. When they return from the training, I will be supporting them as they carry out the plans they’ve designed to plant seeds to transform nations and truly love and serve others.

Please pray for these men as they seek to put what they’ve learned into practice.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
